Coastal's Credit Union Development Educators (DEs) were the recipient of the 2017 DE Cooperative Spirit Award. The award is given out by the National Credit Union Foundation (NCUF) Development Education Program. We received this prestigious honor because of the DEs’ hard work in building the Principles and Philosophy Workshop for our employees and leaders here at Coastal. Several members of the DE team traveled down to Tampa, FL to accept the award at the DE Awards Banquet on July 13th, 2017.

Coastal’s Principles and Philosophy Workshop (nicknamed “Camp Coastal”) was such an initial success that, beginning in 2018, it will be conducted twice a year. The two-day event focused on the importance of the Seven Cooperative Principles: Voluntary and open membership, Democratic member control, Member economic participation, Autonomy and independence, Education training and information, Cooperation among cooperatives, and Concern for community. The workshop was organized by Jamie Saunders, Maria Moore, and Amy Gravitte, with support from all of Coastal’s DEs.

This is actually the third time that Coastal DEs have been part of the Cooperative Spirit Award.  Patrick Livingston and Brandon McAdams won in 2014 for creating CUAware, and the North Carolina DEs were collectively honored in 2013 for creating the Carolinas Principles and Philosophy Conference.
