Summer is still officially a month away, but one of the great things about living in North Carolina is that the warm weather arrives early and sticks around well into fall. I’ve been looking forward to summer for a while, because that’s when a lot of our member perks are available. It’s also a time when many of us travel, so I sat down with our Fraud VP, Paul Narcisse, to talk about ways members can protect themselves.
Summer Member Perks
We’re into our second season as the naming sponsor of Coastal Credit Union Midtown Park. Sponsorships like ours help provide free events that our members and community get to enjoy.
We recently hosted the kickoff to summer food truck event, will have more events later in the year. We’re also a sponsor of the Summer Beach Music Festival every Thursday throughout the summer. Watch our events calendar and the North Hills website for upcoming events for you and your family to attend.
Coastal is the official credit union of the defending International League champions Durham Bulls. Like last year, members get 10% discount at ballpark store when you use your Coastal debit or credit card.
Also, we’re once again the presenting sponsor of Durham Bulls Ballpark Project, which will award $10,000 each to four local organizations to renovate their baseball facilities.
North Carolina FC and NC Courage
It’s also our second season as naming sponsor of the Coastal Credit Union Box Office at WakeMed Soccer Park, home of the North Carolina FC and NC Courage soccer teams. As an exclusive offer, Coastal members and employees can get buy one, get one tickets using the discount code published in online banking.
Both teams are a lot of fun to watch. It’s still early in the season, but NCFC is off to a good start and might be a playoff contender this year. The Courage have begun their defense of the NWSL championship, and the team features four players who are also part of the US national team and will play for the World Cup this summer.
Coastal Music Park
Our most notable sponsorship is probably the Coastal Credit Union Music Park at Walnut Creek. Members already familiar with the Fast Lane, which allows debit and credit card holders early and faster entry into concerts. We’ve also been able to share presale offers with our members as they become available, which generates a lot of excitement.
As a new benefit for 2019, our members will now save 10% on food and non-alcoholic beverages at the main concessions when you use your Coastal debit or credit card.
Summer Travel / Fraud Prevention Tips
With summer travel season nearing, members are using their cards and visiting ATMs more frequently. A topic worth revisiting is keeping your card information safe and secure to protect yourself from fraud.
I encourage you to watch the latest Coffee with Chuck video to hear from our fraud expert, Paul Narcisse. Here are some highlighted tips to help protect yourself from becoming a fraud victim:
- When traveling, keep your cards securely on you, or locked in a hotel safe
- Avoid ATMs in remote or poorly visible locations
- Check the card reader. Make sure nothing else is inserted into it, or attached to the top of it. If you see anything suspicious, notify the police and whoever owns the ATM
- Even if it looks OK, make sure the keypad is shielded from view when entering your PIN
- For gas, look for pumps that use an app or take mobile payments
- Monitor your accounts, and your credit reports
- If you aren’t applying for a loan soon, freeze your credit until you need it
Coastal provides a number of tools to help you monitor your account and to help prevent unauthorized use:
- Set up alerts in Online Banking
- Set up additional credit card fraud text alerts inside MyCardInfo
- Use our online travel notifications to let us know when and where you’re traveling
- Use the CardNav app to limit the types of transactions, locations and amounts that your card can be used for, or to simply turn your card off when it’s not in use
We hope you never become a victim, but if you ever do experience ID theft, Coastal offers idAlly ID theft recovery services, which are available to all members at no cost. If a member suspects ID theft, they can call us and we’ll assign them to a certified, professional recovery advocate.
A recovery advocate completes the recovery work on member’s behalf, reports progress along the way, and will be there for you until your good name is restored – no matter how long it takes.
Whether you’re traveling or staying close to home and enjoying some of the many member perks that Coastal offers right here in the community, I hope you have an enjoyable summer.
