It's no secret that barcodes are everywhere in our day-to-day lives. Go into any grocery store and there will be a barcode on virtually everything you pick up. They are used to store and track information and assist with inventory and pricing. These same barcodes can only be read one way and are being revolutionized into Quick Response (QR) Codes, which are becoming more and more popular with the rise of COVID-19 in order to prevent the virus from spreading.

With the use of QR codes everywhere you turn, the risk of falling victim of a QR scam is higher than ever. Many times, QR codes have website links embedded into them and this is where they can become dangerous. The most common method threat actors use to exploit users is to have a malicious link embedded into the QR code. Once scanned, the link downloads and activates malware onto the victim’s device. These attacks are generally targeting mobile devices such as phones and tablets. Phones and tablets usually have weaker security which means we must be more diligent in order to protect information.

1. If you do not need to use QR codes, Don’t
Often times restaurants and stores will use QR codes to either view menus or as an easier, faster way to pay. Unless you have no other option, it's always best to avoid scanning QR codes. If a restaurant uses a QR code for customers to view their menu, ask if you can have a paper version of the menu instead.
2. Confirm the QR code is from a trusted source
Before you scan anything, always make sure you know where the QR code is coming from.
3. Avoid scanning QR codes received in an email
You should never scan a QR code that you get in your email. Odds are, it isn't coming from a trusted source.
4. Use a scanning software
Scanning softwares and apps allow you to view the website link before clicking on it so you can see if it's legitimate and trustworthy.
