Don't Fall For This Scam
What Is A Scareware Scam?
Scareware is malicious software that tricks users into visiting malware-infested websites using pop-ups. It's also commonly known as deception software, rogue scanner software, or fraudware.
Coastal's Fraud Tips & Updates
How Does It Work?
Scareware is truly"scary" because it often appears to be so legitimate that users fall for it more often than you would think. Thankfully, Scareware usually follows a similar pattern so it's easy to detect if you know what to look out for. Here's how it works:
- Pop-ups warn you that dangerous files have been found on your computer or phone and ask you to register or download for antivirus software.
- They will often mimic names and warning messages that you recognize so that you believe it is legitimate.
- You will fall for it and share personal information thinking you are doing the "right thing".
- The scammers will then use your credit card and/or personal information to steal money from you and/or commit identity theft.
How To Protect Yourself From Scareware
For your own security, it's important that you stay informed and follow these tips so you can spot scareware attacks before you fall victim:
- Never click on malware notifications. If you see a pop-up, banner, or window warning you that your computer is infected and prompting you to download a software solution, it’s almost certainly a scam. Do not click. Instead, you should immediately conduct a scan of your computer using your Anti Virus Software to determine if there is an immediate threat.
- Keep your browser updated. This helps protect against scareware pop-ups in the first place.
- Always use genuine antivirus software. Using updated protection from a trusted security company is the best possible defense against scareware, because it will alert you of potential threats.
Keeping Your Information Safe & Secure Together
The most important thing is to NEVER share your security credentials with anyone and, if something doesn’t seem right, report it right away.
As a reminder, Coastal will never ask you for this information:
- 16 digit card number nor your account number
- Usernames and passwords
- One-time security codes
